artist statement

Nothing is ever purely black and white.  In our day-to-day lives, we tend to operate in a grey zone; yet when darkness starts to surround us, we are often able to find a silver lining.  It is the intermingling of the dark, the light, and everything in between that makes us strong, makes us weak, and makes us human.

Stark Unreality captures a sense of loss through my aggressive slashes of paint, reminiscent of destruction- like a forest fire that has decimated everything in its path. Although the charred timber is badly burned and beaten down, it is still standing.  Lighter representations of new beginnings and reconstruction provide a welcome sense of promise and peace.  Throughout these abstract compositions, two seemingly contradictory forces become strikingly complimentary.

Whether black or white, straight or curved, smooth or textural- I believe that extreme polar opposites can coexist in one complete and harmonious masterpiece.  This is perhaps a message that our world needs to hear right now- more than ever.
